Avian Influenza Awareness
Bird Flu Alert
King Island is an important stopover and destination for many migratory bird species, connecting us to bird populations from across Australia and beyond. While these migrations are a valuable part of our natural environment, they also highlight the importance of ongoing wildlife health monitoring.
Avian influenza (bird flu) is a disease that primarily affects birds but can also infect some mammals, including seals and other wildlife that come into contact with infected birds.
King Island is encouraging residents, landholders, birdwatchers, and visitors to remain vigilant and report any unusual illness, behaviour, or deaths in wild birds or other wildlife.
Report Concerns:
Emergency Animal Disease Hotline: 1800 675 888

What to do:
-
Do not handle sick or dead birds or wildlife.
-
Keep pets away from wildlife carcasses.
-
Record the location and, if possible, take photographs from a safe distance.
-
Report unusual wildlife illness or deaths promptly.
-
Early detection and reporting play an important role in protecting King Island's wildlife, livestock, and environment.

King Island is home and host to a wide range of birds. Species present on the island varies according to the time of year and the weather conditions. A number of birds, such as the Flame Robin and Grey Fantail, migrate across Bass Strait in the spring and autumn, but several remain and breed and many more are residents all year.
Birding Hotspots

King Island has several threatened bird species including 3 that have been identified as Critically Endangered. These indicate that environmentally, all on King Island is not well. Because of this, a Conservation Action Plan is now in place that aims to recover all threatened species and their habitats.
